Pipe Cowl Knitting Pattern
A knitting pattern for a lightweight and wonderfully soft merino wool cowl – a small project with a beautiful textured stitch that’s surprisingly easy to knit.
Pipe Cowl is one of my most popular knitting patterns, and I think it’s because it combines simple knitting with a striking result.
It’s also the perfect weekend knitting project. With just two balls of yarn, you’ll soon have a lightweight, soft and versatile cowl that you’ll enjoy wearing throughout the year.
The cowl is knitted using one solid-coloured yarn and one self-striping yarn, creating a beautiful textured fabric where the colours work together to form the pattern. You simply alternate between the two yarns every other round, making it an enjoyable project that’s easy to memorise.
Although the finished cowl looks intricate, it’s a great project even if you haven’t been knitting for very long.
The finished cowl is lightweight, soft and comfortable to wear. It provides warmth without feeling bulky and works just as well tucked inside a jacket as it does worn over a sweater or blazer. Knitted in fine merino wool, it feels wonderfully soft against the skin without being itchy.
Designed as a unisex accessory, Pipe Cowl looks equally good on women and men and has become a favourite handmade gift for many knitters.
For the textured stitch pattern to stand out beautifully, I recommend choosing colours with good contrast – a dark solid colour with a light multicoloured yarn, or vice versa.
