Classic Cashmere Cardigan Knitting Pattern 

Knitting pattern for a timeless cashmere cardigan – an easy raglan cardigan that’s enjoyable to knit and perfect for every occasion.

I wanted to create a classic cardigan that even knitters with limited garment-making experience would feel confident knitting. The result is a timeless design with a clever construction and very little finishing.

The cardigan is worked flat from the bottom up on circular needles (front – back – front). Once the body is complete, the sleeves are knitted separately and then placed onto the same needle as the body. From there, the yoke is worked as one piece with simple raglan decreases.

One of my favourite features of this construction is that you can easily try the cardigan on as you knit. The neckline isn’t shaped until the very end, allowing you to decide for yourself whether you’d like a higher, closer-fitting neckline or a deeper, more open one.

The original version is knitted in 100% Italian cashmere, creating an incredibly soft, lightweight and elegant cardigan. However, the pattern works equally well with any yarn that matches the recommended gauge, such as Lang Yarns Alpaca Soxx, Lang Yarns Mohair Luxe, or for an even more luxurious version, Cashmere Dreams held double.

To keep the pattern as beginner-friendly as possible, the front edges are finished with a simple crocheted edging and crocheted button loops. If you prefer traditional knitted button bands, you can easily add them instead—just allow for one extra ball of yarn.

This is a cardigan you’ll reach for again and again. A timeless wardrobe staple that’s just as beautiful worn with jeans as layered over a dress.
