Mia’s Cashmere ONE Knitting Pattern

Knitting pattern for an oversized cashmere sweater with open sides and a boat neckline – my very first design in 100% cashmere.

Mia’s Cashmere ONE will always have a special place in my heart.

When I first began selling Italian cashmere back in 2013, I spent a long time wondering what I wanted to create with such an extraordinary yarn. Knitting a hat or a cowl felt easy enough, but using an entire box of cashmere for one sweater… that felt like a very big step.

Eventually, this sweater was born.

It has everything I personally love in a sweater: a relaxed boxy silhouette, a slightly cropped body, elegant boat neckline and slim ribbed sleeves. The open sides can be fastened with press studs if you like, or sewn closed for a more traditional sweater.

The original version is knitted in a beautiful mock brioche mesh stitch, giving the fabric extra loft, softness and a wonderful drape. Like brioche knitting, the stitch creates a slightly thicker fabric while remaining incredibly light. Several knitters have also made this design in moss stitch, creating a slightly lighter but equally beautiful version.

The front and back are knitted separately, after which stitches are picked up around the armholes and the sleeves are worked from the top down. The slightly dropped shoulder allows the slim ribbed sleeves to fit comfortably without feeling restrictive.

If you’d like a longer sweater, simply continue knitting to your preferred length. As a guide, allow approximately one extra ball of yarn per front or back piece for every additional 10 cm.

The original is knitted in luxurious Italian 100% cashmere, but the pattern also works beautifully in other yarns that match the recommended tension. One lovely alternative is holding one strand of Lang Yarns Merino 400 together with one strand of Lang Yarns Mohair Luxe, creating a beautifully soft fabric with a gentle halo.

More than a decade later, this is still one of my favourite designs. Simple, modern, wonderfully comfortable—and one that only becomes softer and more beautiful the more it is worn.
